Netflix: Kelly Hoppensteadt & Allison Iott

Hi everyone!

Allison and I decided to take a different approach and actually create a PowerPoint presentation. No need to make one yourselves, we just took the opportunity to bring an extra bit of flair!

We suggest that you make the presentation full screen and then just go through each slide itself. (To do so, click the "view on slideshare" button at the bottom right under the presentation, then the new website will pop up and will enable you to press a full screen option again at the bottom right of the presentation). Hope you enjoy it!!

Thanks,
Kelly & Allison

  1. Alright showoff's... Just kidding, good call with the PowerPoint! Aside from having a severely lacking red quadrant, I think Netflix has already grown very strong in the other quadrants. The true test of Netflix in time will come with the continued advancement of their green and blue quadrants. With the dvd rental, and more recently dvd streaming, industry evolving so rapidly, this will be a very competitive arena. Though Netflix currently must compete with Redbox and other dvd kiosks, they have few serious competitors in streaming media. Unfortunately, more of these companies are popping up almost daily and Netflix will really need to up it's game if they are to survive. As a very big Netflix fan, I hope they're able to do it!

  2. I agree, Aaron. I think it could be easy for Netflix to become complacent right now because of their domination. However, just at Blockbuster fell, Netflix can too if they don't anticipate the next big thing first.

  3. I never knew Netflix was so "anti-red" with regards to basically having no policies in place, but it seems to be working for them thus far. It will be interesting to see if the company continues to grow and expand, and therefore needs more employees, if this will have to change. I am also interest in seeing how "green" they can become in the upcoming years.

  4. They've been pretty much the only player in the streaming video market, but Red Box has noted their intentions to enter into this media. It'll be interesting to see how Netflix will be able to differentiate themselves against a low-cost provider.

  5. In regards to Caitlin's comment, Netflix wants to hire the best people they can for the position and basically give them complete creative freedom. They've noticed a trend with other companies where they start to grow and to avoid chaos, they stifle individual freedom. Netflix knows they are intensely "green" and to avoid this, they give extra freedom to let their employees know they trust them. It's a very novel idea and I hope other "green" companies jump on board.

  6. Great looking presentation ladies! I find it quite surprising that Netflix is so strongly yellow, but weak in the red quadrant. At first glance, it doesn't seem like having happy, engaged employees would necessarily be the top priority since the majority of customers have no interaction with Netflix employees. However, I recently read an article about how ridiculously efficient their employees in the distribution centers are, and much of that was attributed to high engagement. This also speaks to their green quadrant. Forward-thinking, innovative people must have played a big part in developing the strong culture of Netflix.

  7. Right, even though the employees aren't interacting with customers as much, they're interacting with each other. Teams are really important to Netflix because it helps them grow in the green quadrant. To this company, happy employees = productive employees. What a concept, right?

  8. I enjoyed reading that they don't hire "Brilliant Jerks." I feel like so few companies really look for fit over skill, but it really is essential to building the culture you want at an organization. It also would save on potential turnover costs they would incur due to the non-culture fit.

  9. I too was a little surprised how little "red" Netflix is. Although I think it makes sense because they are still in the start-up entrepreneurial stage. I think it is definitely clear that they are very green. They are continuously coming out with new products and improvements to their existing products. For instance, they are beginning to produce their first TV exclusively for Netflix. I think Netflix will have to continue to stay strong in the green quadrant but continue to grow and strengthen the other quadrants like red and yellow to ensure they are well-rounded and able to compete more long-term.

I know I love Netflix and will continue to use it for a long time!

  10. It makes me nervous when companies lack in the red (control) quadrant. Obviously it hasn't been too much of an issue for Netflix thus far, however, without specific controls and policies in place I feel like they make it very easy for employees to abuse their privileges. It is certainly nice that there are no established work hours or vacation days etc... but I am surprised that they don't experience any issues as a result of that. As they continue to grow, they may have to reevaluate this strategy.

  11. As a customer of netflix I've always been very pleased with Netflix customer satisfaction policies. They seem to be very on top of things that they need to be (issuing a refund when video streaming was having issues) and very casual on other things (not caring when you lose the little white slips the DVDs come in). I would hate to see this yellow quadrant attribute change with expansion or a move too strongly in to the red quadrant.

  12. The lack of red always has a tendency to make me uneasy, maybe they haven't had a lawsuit yet. I also wonder how many employees Netflix has. It seems like smaller companies especially those in the tech industry lack strong red quadrants in their earlier stages until they grow fairly large. As for the green, they better keep up the innovation as Apple TV and Google TV set their sites on streaming content.

  13. For the blue quadrant, I believe Netflix still has room for improvement. Not too long ago, Netflix made some type of announcement stating that they were going to eliminate receiving DVD's in the mail, and become primarily a streaming movie company. However, they need to be careful in jumping the gun. I think that they do not have a great selection of streaming movies. There are a significant number of older movies, along with new releases that Netflix does not have streaming. It still gives competitors such as Blockbuster, along with the smaller video stores the chance to compete, especially if they have a wider selection to chose from.

  14. Very cool prezzie first of all. But Netflix truly will need more of a "red" quadrant going forward in my mind. Without planners or "red" people I believe it will be difficult to maintain your current business. I'm very green like netflix but I think if I didnt have enough "red" I would never make forward progression in my life or schooling. Hopefully Netflixs understands this as they continue to grow.
